Goal
- Provide a translated Fijian language user interface for Firefox.
- Retain the technical meaning of the original English version and be understandable by the end user, who speaks Fijian.
- New users of Mozilla Firefox must be able to navigate the localized version just as they would the default English interface.
Why Avonsys
Avonsys has undertaken the Fijian Firefox Project to give Fijian Internet users the capability to browse the Internet with a Browser using the Fijian language.By working with ISOC and its Pacific partner, PICISOC, this project gives Avonsys the opportunity to contribute to Fijian Culture. The project should help foster Fijian language usage and its preservation. On the same note it could also be an academic vehicle of teaching Fijian language evolution and adaption.
The project enables us to provide a localized perspective to some of the service we provide like Web Hosting Services and Mail Hosting Services for Fiji-based customers. We care about security and also offer Security Solutions to provide a safe and productive Web experience.
Objectives
- Translate English (en-US) language file into the Fijian language
- Create an installable .xpi file for easy installation of the new Fijian localization
Problems Faced:
- Translating technical words into the Fijian language. E.g. Status Bar, Tool Bar, Edit
- Translating computer jargon into the Fijian language. E.g. Windows, File.

Installation
In order to install the newly created Firefox language pack:- Download the xpi
- If you're using Firefox to access the site, you will receive a prompt asking if it's OK to install the file. If you do not receive a prompt, just save the file on your hard drive and use Firefox (File >> Open File) to load this file. There will be a short countdown before you're able to select the install option and go ahead with the installation.
- Once the language pack is installed, Firefox will tell you it needs to be restarted. Click on the small restart button that appears and wait for a few seconds as Firefox does its thing.
Change your default language or...
- Once its all done and Firefox loads up, you will need to manually choose your new language. Type about:config in your address bar.
- Don't let Firefox's warning scare you off. Choose to go ahead and be careful. You'll now receive a long list of Firefox settings. It may seem a little daunting at first but it really isn't.
- Type general.useragent.locale into the Filter bar and the list will be shortened down to one line.
- Double click on general.useragent.locale and you'll be greeted with a small window. If you have the default English installation of Firefox, the window will contain en-US. Replace this with fj-FJ, click OK and restart Firefox by quitting the application and starting it up again.
- You will now see your favorite web browser translated in Fijian and ready to use!
...or use the Locale Switcher add on (recommended).
- Download and install Locale Switcher. Follow the above instructions for help in installing this particular package.
- Once you've gone through the necessary steps and installed Locale Switcher, you'll have the ability to easily switch to another Language without going through the tedious config page. You can access Locale switcher in Tools >> Languages.
- Restart Firefox and you'll see your favorite browser sporting a new translated interface.
